Event Details

Join Amanda Procter from Pueblito Canada and Ananya Ohri from York University, for a discussion about two different approaches to using art as a tool for community development.  The aim of this breakfast meeting is to facilitate knowledge-sharing between activist and educators about the challenges and possibilities of arts-based education.  Amanda and Ananya will discuss their experiences of working with Drishti Media and Pueblito Canada in working for social transformation through arts-based education.

Amanda will discuss her recent visit with Pueblito’s Nicaragua partner organization, FUNARTE (Foundation for Creative Children’s Art).  FUNARTE is an internationally-recognized Nicaraguan NGO that has pioneered the use of mural painting and art in general as a tool for popular education, empowerment, rights promotion and community development in general. (http://www.funarte.org.ni/)

Ananya will discuss Drishti Media in India.  She will explore their approach to using community video units and participatory communication to affect social change. Drishti Media aims to create alternative media spaces for the voices of marginalized peoples. By putting the power of art and media in the hands of the most marginalized groups Drishti Media aims to achieve empowerment and a shift in perceptions of the causes of and solutions to social issues.
